Cristiano Ronaldo, last year’s Ballon d’Or laureate, could be subject to a punishment for his goal celebration as he score an equaliser on last Sunday’s La Liga Clasico held in Barcelona.
The Real Madrid star, like always, seemed to be urging the crowd consisting of Barca fans to calm down while he score the 1-1 equaliser at the 31st minute at the Nou Camp.
The Portugal team captain has often been the subject of abuse himself. However, he has also forged a reputation for for winding up supporters of opposing teams. He was widely criticized last season as he tore off his shirt to celebrate a successful penalty in the Champions League final game played against Atletico Madrid.
Gael Clichy and Guillem Balague reconsidered the game as chances opened up for Barcelona to score a 2-0 until Ronaldo score the equaliser. The President of the LFP, Javier Tebas stated that they are particularly careful and wary of any provocative gesture made by a player when scoring a goal. They are also very harsh towards any conduct and behavior that might incite violence among supporters.
He further added that Ronaldo’s act of celebration should be sanctioned by a fine or even a suspension. His association would be looking into it and coming up with a verdict.
Last November, a fight among supporters of Deportivo La Coruna and Atletico Madrid led to the death of a person. Since then, Spain’s soccer associations are seeking to put an end to any action by players that might incite violence.
